The Alberta Bison Centre is the office for the Bison Producers of Alberta - providing bison producers a one-stop source of leading edge, reliable and accurate bison information.  Located at Leduc, Alberta, Canada (20 km south of Edmonton), the Alberta Bison Centre offers an extensive resource library on bison research, production and marketing information.

Alberta Bison Industry Overview

Alberta bison represent over 50% of the Canadian bison population.  Prior to the BSE border closure of May 2003, nearly 60% of all bison meat processed in Alberta was exported to the USA, Europe and Pacific Asia.  Now that the border is open again, marketers are striving to maintain supply for their customers both domestically and internationally.  Currently, Alberta has three slaughter plants that are federal and European Union (EU) approved processing facilities, and numerous provincially approved facilities.

Bison is deemed to be the cornerstone of the diversified livestock industry in Alberta.  The opportunity for marketing bison meat is tremendous with the increasing demand from the consumer for a healthier, naturally grown, hormone free meat product.

Bison Producers of Alberta

The Bison Producers of Alberta was created in the year 2000, as the Alberta Bison Commission, by the Order in Council of Alberta - operating under the Regulation Plan as set forth by the Province of Alberta Marketing Council.  In 2004 the three bison organizations in Alberta (the Alberta Bison Commission, the Alberta Bison Association and the Peace Country Bison Association) formed a coalition and became the Bison Producers of Alberta.

Functions and Services:

The Bison Producers of Alberta (BPA) represents the Bison industry for the province. The BPA works together with the Canadian Bison Association on bison research, producer profitability, On Farm Food Safety, processing concerns and trade issues.  Representation from across all areas of Alberta ensures effective representation of the Bison industry for lobbying and communication in both government and private sectors.  The BPA promotes the marketing of Bison and Bison products, displays a booth for promotional events and trade shows to help increase consumer awareness of the Bison meat products, and provides on-going support to the Bison industry as a whole.
